Announcing the arrival of a new baby is a big deal. It's privilege, an honor and a joy. People want to share in the excitement and once the word is out, it's hard to reign it in. I come from a large family....at least that's how we think of ourselves. My dad is one of four and between them there are 12 kids. We would regularly be together for Thanksgiving or Christmas, and almost annually for a mother's day gathering. And it wouldn't just be my grandma, the 8 kids and spouses and 12 cousins, we would also have my grandma's sisters, their kids, and their kids. We would regularly be about 50 or 60 people milling about my aunt's house. And some folks you only saw once every year or two, and so you had to reintroduce yourself each time you saw them. Well, one year, it was thanksgiving and the phone rang. When it's busy like that you don't wait for someone who lives there to answer...you just pick

The last couple of nights have been rough for our son, Steven. He's been restless and fussy and mostly just wants to be held...all night. Those aren't my favorite nights as a mom. I love my kids but I love sleep and my own space in the middle of the night. Lucky for my kids, I love them more, so when they struggle, or can't sleep, or are sick, they win out. So, Steven and I have snuggled a lot. Like all the time. Which sounds lovely if you think you're just holding a sweet sleeping baby...but it's not like that, he's squirmy and fussy and wants to keep eating and eating—mostly for comfort, I think. And while they're not the nights I love or the nights I thought I was signing up for when I became a mom, they are part and parcel of the mom-job.
Every mom deals with sleepless nights, sick kids, interrupted meals, constant chatter, boogers, spit up, diapers, throw up, tantrums and the like. It's part of the gig.
Joseph had to go by faith.
Life in the Bible was so easy. Sure, we know they didn't have washers and dryers, or cars, or microwaves, but really, besides all that, they got off pretty easy. Think about it. You just heard today's story about Joseph. We get a simple discourse where it's matter of fact. Joseph's engaged to Mary, which actually means they had signed a legal contract to be married. But they weren't living together because they hadn't had the big wedding feast. That was normal. Sometimes a couple might wait a year between the legal part and the big wedding feast. So Mary and Joseph were in the waiting time, and then she ends up pregnant. Now, Joseph's a reasonable man and obviously understands how those things works.
