But How Will We Worship Week 3 - June 28, 2020

Deuteronomy 6:1-9

As we talk about what it means to worship, we think a lot about the big things we do….the Sunday morning things, we sing, we pray, we dance, but there’s also something much more subtle that we can do that is an act of worship. And that is to study the Bible. Studying the Bible is and has been considered a high form of reverence and the most reliable way to plug into God. Want to know what God is saying...read the scriptures.

It’s part of why the sermon takes such a chunk of each worship service. Proclaiming the word of God, helping us to listen, and hear the stories of scripture is central to what we do in the community together. It used to be that only a few could read and study the Bible. They were the

Worshipping in Nature - June 21, 2020

Psalm 24: 1-6

I grew up in the desert. Probably not quite the desert you conjure I your mind (unless you’re my dad or tuning in from my home town). Not an Arizona type desert with cactus. But the “high desert” in a rural and remote part of California. A desert nestled between 2 majestic mountain ranges, but a desert none the less.

Dirt. tumbleweed. Sagebrush. Rabbitbrush. And not much precipitation. Big storms would come from the East or the West and hit the mountains and dump snow or rain, then pass over the valley without sharing much and then bless the next set of mountains. I’m sure there are technical

But How Will We Worship - June 14, 2020

Psalm 100:1-5

Today, I’m hoping we can have a little heart to heart. This worship series took root in the tremendous loss that we have faced as a church, among countless churches, in the midst of this pandemic. We are a people of ritual and tradition. We are a people that gather and relishes community. We have a habit of doing what we’ve always done. In fact, among the clergy, there’s always space for a competition of the things parishioners tell us “We’ve always done” and then, by extension, that we cannot meddle with.

Suspending our traditions is hard. Not coming to this place to worship and be together is hard. For many of us, the church is our community. You are our family and friends. And if we can’t be here, it’s like we can’t be anywhere with anyone. There are options, at least now that shelter in

Peace with Justice Sunday- June 7, 2020

Isaiah 1: 10-20

There’s a debate in Christian theology around the notion of “once saved always saved”. Some traditions claim that once you profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, that you are saved, once and for all. Once saved, always saved.

Methodists are not among those traditions. We believe that Christ’s saving work is perfect and complete. And that professing Jesus as Lord and Savior is about being saved over and over and over again. Being saved in the ongoing sense. Professing Christ is about

For Thine Is The Kingdom - May 31, 2020

The New Zealand Prayer Book

For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever (and ever) amen.

This is the final verse in our study on the Lord’s prayer. Compared to some of our other verses, this one has a little less meat, so we’ll spend a little time revisiting the rest of the prayer and then address this final verse.

Remember, Jesus shared this prayer to a large group of people, the context of our passage is as part of the sermon on the mount shared on the side of the sea of galilee. The sermon on the mount is a collection of various teachings of Jesus. They were not just for the disciples, but for anyone and everyone who may have been listening. In it, Jesus shares a critique of those who pray simply to be noticed and heard. He admonishes a posture of humility and conversation directly with God. Then he offers this prayer: Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily

  • Neighborhood Theatre Presents "Our Town"

Mark your calendars for Our Town, a benefit staged reading for Family Promise – May 3, 2pm!

Heralded as “the greatest American play ever written,” three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Thornton Wilder’s Our Town shows us that even the most ordinary life, is an extraordinary thing indeed.

Synopsis: set in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners (a closeknit community much like our beloved Moscow) between 1901 and 1913, the play is divided into three acts: an ordinary day, a wedding, a death. The story follows two neighboring families, the Webbs and the Gibbs, and their children who grow up together, fall in love, and are married ‘until death do them part’ (act 3).

Please join us, The Neighborhood Theatre, for a staged reading of this thought-provoking and heartfelt classic. The production is FREE though donations are welcome with all proceeds benefiting Family Promise hosted at Moscow First United Methodist Church. Bonus: with any donation amount, folks will be entered into a raffle for a beautiful handmade quilt generously provided by local artisan Sue Anderson.

When & Where: Sunday, May 3, 2pm @ Moscow First United Methodist Church

Who’s invited: EVERYONE! ALL congregations that collaborate for Family Promise and any friends, family, neighbors, etc. are most welcome so please spread the word! This event is intended as a celebration of our work together and a show of gratitude to our Family Promise partners.

Please note… The whole event will last up to 3 hours. There will be two intermissions, including one longer break with light refreshments provided. While the script is appropriate for all ages, the length and complexity of topics (marriage; death) may be challenging for some younger viewers.
