It’s easy to expect too much from Jesus. Maybe that’s not the right way to say it…it’s easy to expect Jesus to do all the things we think are best. After all, he said, “Ask and it shall be answered…” but laying all our demands on him is not exactly what he meant. But it’s easy to think it is. And it’s easy to get frustrated when Jesus doesn’t do what we ask. But Jesus isn’t a genie. He doesn’t nod and flicks his wrist to complete our requests. Jesus is the incarnation of God here on earth meant to connect us with the Divine and all that God offers and to show us the gifts of
Matthew 27: 32-43The men hanging on each side of Jesus were criminals, condemned to death because that is what the law required. As we look at them hanging there, part of us thinks that these felons got what they deserved…they were not up to par and broke the basic rules for living…but Jesus, Jesus is different…he was being executed for being above par for setting new rules for living…it is dangerous to be freed from the bindings of society that tell us who is good enough, who is wealthy enough, who is powerful enough…it is dangerous to be freed to love God and love each other and love ourselves…we pause beneath

I should probably admit that this is the hardest part of the Lazarus story for me. I struggle because I believe that what Jesus offers to Martha is what Jesus offers to all of us--the chance to witness the glory of God if we believe and trust in him. And I believe that in him there is resurrection and life. That’s not the hard part for me. The hard part is that Jesus resurrects Lazarus after 4 days, but hasn’t resurrected or even spared many of the people we’ve prayed for. I don’t have a solution for that. It’s not because we lacked faith. It’s not because we didn’t pray hard enough. It’s not because Jesus doesn’t love us as much as he loved
I feel like this is a conversation we have all had with Jesus. If you had just been there!!!! We plead and pray for Jesus to show up. We watch and wait for God to do something. And when we don’t see God doing something, showing up in some way we tend to get frustrated and angry. “It would all be different if you had just been there!!!”
As I read the first section of this story, I heard the sisters send Jesus a note, and then he waited 2 days and then he set out. I counted 4 days total. But this passage says that when Jesus got to Bethany, to the siblings, Lazarus had been dead for 4 days. So either, he died right after his sisters sent the note, or Jesus took his sweet time walking from

Mark your calendars for Our Town, a benefit staged reading for Family Promise – May 3, 2pm!
Heralded as “the greatest American play ever written,” three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Thornton Wilder’s Our Town shows us that even the most ordinary life, is an extraordinary thing indeed.
Synopsis: set in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners (a closeknit community much like our beloved Moscow) between 1901 and 1913, the play is divided into three acts: an ordinary day, a wedding, a death. The story follows two neighboring families, the Webbs and the Gibbs, and their children who grow up together, fall in love, and are married ‘until death do them part’ (act 3).
Please join us, The Neighborhood Theatre, for a staged reading of this thought-provoking and heartfelt classic. The production is FREE though donations are welcome with all proceeds benefiting Family Promise hosted at Moscow First United Methodist Church. Bonus: with any donation amount, folks will be entered into a raffle for a beautiful handmade quilt generously provided by local artisan Sue Anderson.
When & Where: Sunday, May 3, 2pm @ Moscow First United Methodist Church
Who’s invited: EVERYONE! ALL congregations that collaborate for Family Promise and any friends, family, neighbors, etc. are most welcome so please spread the word! This event is intended as a celebration of our work together and a show of gratitude to our Family Promise partners.
Please note… The whole event will last up to 3 hours. There will be two intermissions, including one longer break with light refreshments provided. While the script is appropriate for all ages, the length and complexity of topics (marriage; death) may be challenging for some younger viewers.
